Message from the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer (HDR) Sisters

Nurturing Minds, Shaping Hearts: Our Schools, Our Mission

Mother Providencia Catholic School was founded by the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer (HDR) Sisters of Accra as part of our enduring commitment to education as a powerful instrument of service and transformation.

Education lies at the very heart of the HDR Sisters’ apostolic mission. Through our network of schools across Ghana, we are devoted to nurturing young minds and shaping hearts grounded in academic excellence, Christian faith, moral discipline, and service to humanity. Our approach to education seeks not only to impart knowledge, but also to form character, inspire leadership, and cultivate a deep sense of responsibility to God and society.

Rooted in the vision of our founder, the late Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD, the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer strive to embody the obedience of Christ in all our works. Guided by humility, love, and devotion, we remain steadfast in our mission to form future leaders who will serve with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

We warmly welcome you to explore our school community and to learn more about the values, vision, and legacy of service that define our educational ministry. May God’s grace accompany you as you journey with us in faith and learning.

Inspiring Excellence with Values

Our Story Through Time

Our Founding Story

Mother Providencia Catholic School, formerly known as Divine Providence School, was established in 2006 at East Legon as a Nursery School. Upon completion, students are typically transitioned to Mary Mother of Good Counsel School, Christ the King International School, or other sister schools managed by the Sisters of the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer of the Accra Congregation.

The Early Days

In October 2006, Sr. Paula Otchere (HDR) was entrusted by the then Superior General, Brigid Agbenyo, to help establish a nursery school at East Legon, Accra,Together withSr. Victoria Depla and Miss Jennifer Kwakyiwaa, Divine Providence Nursery School began on the 16th January, 2007 with one class of thirty-one pupils.

Growth and Relocation

In response to increasing enrollment, the school acquired a parcel of land at New Legon in 2015. Through dedication and perseverance, the ground floor of a two-storey school building was constructed, and in 2016, the school successfully relocated to its current premises. Since the relocation, the school has expanded its offerings to include basic level education. The new environment has allowed for the installation of modern facilities designed to enhance effective teaching and learning.
